Smile and the world smiles with you, so the saying goes And so it is – you smile the smile you practiced when you were young To lie, to manipulate, to make mommy happy so she would give you a cookie The smile when someone rips you’re heart in two but you can’t let them know The smile when you tell your boss you understand, it’s nothing personal The economy, the industry, the world is changing, you know how it is Yes you know how it is Smile through it all, chin up, chest out, plug on through Day in, day out As friends leave, lovers fall out of love, creditors hold their hands out to empty pockets, And children ask for more, always more And as long as you smile they never have to feel your weight Never have to look inside your cheery disposition to see your darkened soul Never know how hard you worked to stay another day, to play another game To smile one more time When behind closed doors all you could do was cry
