Evan and Eldad - Rositsa's surfers. We had a lovely dinner and tour of the city and a great time roadtripping to Koprivshtitsa.
Evan was amazing - just 21 years old, he spent his adolescence playing video games and weighing in at just over 300 pounds. He decided one day to change his life and did! He lost the weight and is now traveling the world. He learned before his second decade the power we all have to create the lives we want. Way to go Evan!
Due to space constraints they took to converting car garages into bars. They are scattered throughout Sofia, a definite Bulgarian icon as are chain smoking and chain drinking. With beer and cigarettes this cheap, why not?!
Orthodox church build in Koprivshtitsa during the 1800s. My first candle lighting in Eastern Europe.
There are great little cafes with loads of salads, beer, and hearty foods to choose from everywhere, even the smallest of towns!
Eldad and Emil drinking beer. Emil was the quintessential Bulgarian man - never went more than an hour without a beer or five minutes without a cigarette! Eldad didn't even try to keep up but he enjoyed joining in now and again!
Loic, the couchsurfier who stayed one night with me and the family, showing Vlady how to string a guitar.
Our wonderful dinner set high above Sofia. It was unexpectedly cold and I was lovingly wrapped in a Winnie the Pooh blanket!
Goddess (or is it Saint?) Sofia - the Russians promoted atheism so for awhile Saint Sofia became Goddess Sofia.
The antique market outside Alexander Neveski Cathedral was amazing - Russian, German, Bulgarian and Turkish war artifacts, flasks, medals, all things imaginable next to antique costume jewelry and household goods.
The little town known as "cleaning up after the rams" was filled with storks - nests lined every rooftop as parents swooped through the sky and babies waited to be fed.
